About ETHD

The Eden Township Healthcare District is focused on meeting the healthcare needs of the community, both through medical services and by investing in the health and well-being of the community.

The Eden Township Healthcare District was established in 1948 to build and operate Eden Hospital, a community hospital to serve residents of Castro Valley, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Hayward and nearby communities. The District operated Eden until 1998, when Eden Medical Center became an affiliate of Sutter Health. One of the leading factors in choosing to affiliate with Sutter Health was their common commitment to community-based health care.

As a result, the members of the Board of Directors serve two roles: to serve, along with the appointed community members, on the governing Board of Directors of Eden Medical Center to manage the business of the District and to provide grants to organizations through the Community Health Fund.  Download District Bylaws.

The other focus of the District is to oversee the endowment fund known as the Community Health Fund. Through responsible investments, the fund has grown each year, enabling local organizations to provide much-needed health care services to those in need. Members of the Board carefully evaluate every application and make their grant selections twice annually in open session during their scheduled Board meeting.
